July Barista of the Month – Meet Gigi

Kristy Aylmore

Monday, 31 July 2023

Located in the heart of Burwood, Aurora is serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Their mission is simple; to provide a full table of food for dine in customers and just as much flavour for the takeaway options. Step into Aurora and you will be hit with the delicious smell of modern Australia and Indonesian ingredients.

Aurora serves something for any occasion and all times of the day. Think French toast so delectable you’ll catch yourself going for seconds, slices so jam packed you won’t be able to move after eating and coffee that is so good you’ll be dreaming of it.

We take five to talk to Head Barista, Gigi and ask her about her favourite things about Coffee!

What do you love about coffee?

I love learning latte art and trying and learning new things about coffee.

How do you drink your coffee?

I normally drink a short black in the morning and after that I like to try with milk, I have about 6-7 per day!

I also love filter coffee.

If you could give baristas one tip to help baristas make better coffee, what would it be?

Smile and have fun with the customers, ask other baristas questions and for help. Dew, our barista at Burwood started out only recently and can now pour latte art as good as mine! You guys look after us a lot.

Can you tell us about your relationship with Grinders Coffee?

When we have a question or need advice, I get an answer straight away from our rep, Jasper. You’re like a family as a business. I’ve worked with a lot of other coffee companies that don’t offer this!

What makes Aurora Cafe a great place to work?

The staff joking around together. Everyone is friendly and the coffee is nice. I want to come to visit the café as a customer myself.

What’s your favourite menu item from your café?

The Single Origin coffee, especially the Honduras – Rosa Miriam Games. My go to menu item is the crispy skin salmon with soba noodles and whipped tofu!

What new trends or changes have you seen coming from your customers or the industry?

We’re fairly new, but I’ve noticed our customers come in several times a day which is nice and not always the case.
