FAQS

GENERAL

Arabica (coffea arabica)
Arabica coffee is characterized by its sweetness and acidity, its fruity and zesty flavours and intense aroma. It has a light to medium body and a soft mouthfeel. It contains on average about half of the caffeine of Robusta.
Grinders® uses premium grade Arabica coffees sourced from growing regions around the globe including SE Asia, Africa and South America.
Robusta (coffea canephora)
Robusta coffee is characterised by its woody and earthy flavours. It has lower acidity and a heavier mouthfeel. It is traditionally blended with Arabica beans to achieve excellent body in an espresso.
The Robusta trees are high bearing and disease resistant. Grinders® uses high grade robusta coffees predominately from Uganda and India.
Arabica coffee is used predominately in blended coffee because of its properties of sweetness, acidity and fruit/citrus driven flavours. It generally has a lighter ‘body’, a term that combines the elements of total dissolved solids and subjective mouthfeel. Robusta coffee generally has less sweetness and a woody, earthy character with a heavy body.
You will not likely see a 100% Robusta blends as Robusta is a very strong bean, too strong to drink straight. There are however, some high quality Robusta beans that provide some great flavours and pair up with Arabica blends perfectly. Some of our best blends, including the original Grinders® Brazil Style, are blends of Arabica and Robusta, making sweet tasting, aromatic coffees, perfect for the traditional and new coffee drinkers alike.

Often people will have espresso to give them an energy boost, believing that it is the best source of caffeine. Whilst this is somewhat true, espresso isn’t the biggest source of caffeine. The average 30ml of espresso has 60-80milligrams of caffeine, while a brewed cup such as a plunger or drip filter may contain 80-150 milligrams.

Fairtrade products
Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices, Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.
Today, more than six million people – farmers, producers, workers and their families – in 70 countries benefit from the unique, independent Fairtrade system. Fairtrade provides farmers and workers in developing countries with a fair price (the Fairtrade Price) for their produce, helping protect them from damaging fluctuations in world market prices. They also receive an additional sum of money (the Fairtrade Premium) for investment in social, economic and environmental development in their community, such as educational and medical facilities. Fairtrade Certification standards also prohibit the use of forced and abusive child labour.
Fairtrade delivers a better deal for farmers and producers in the developing world through:
– A fair and stable price for their produce
– Security of long-term contracts
– Investment in local community development
– Improved working conditions
– Environmentally sustainable farming methods
– Support in gaining the knowledge and skills needed to operate successfully in the global economy
Australian Certified Organic
Australian Certified Organic (ACO) is Australia’s largest certifier for organic and biodynamic produce and has over 1500 operators within its certification system. ACO is a not for profit fully-owned subsidiary of Australia Organic Ltd.
ACO provides certification services to operators from all sectors of the organic industry. Certification ensures compliance with national production standards and allows trace back of all products to their origin.
The Australian Certified Organic logo (known as the ‘bud’ is Australia’s organic industry’s leading logo. It carries with it the ability to market organic produce on both domestic and international markets with confidence and market advantage. The logo is well recognised both in Australia, and now in increasingly key areas such as Asia, Europe and the US. Having the largest market share means that organic certification is now becoming synonymous with certification and the bud logo.

This is an unanswerable question. Great coffee comes from every origin around the world. The decision on the best coffee is really up to you. Whilst there are some expensive coffees in the world, these are not always an indication of flavour, maybe just a distinct quality and often a limited supply. Like any commodity, under supply = over demand which then brings a higher price.

One of the best and worst things about coffee are variables. Making your coffee at home and buying it in various cafes means one really big variable – the human element. Each barista, home included, makes coffee a slightly different way and this can result in subtle or major flavour differences. Don’t be afraid of this difference — embrace it. Learn what it is that makes coffee different, talk to your favourite barista or even attend a home barista course.

Grinders® Coffee use Swiss Water Processed (SWP) decaffeinated beans. This uses a process that is 100% chemical free and provides the best quality bean in decaf form. The SWP takes the bean to within 99.8% caffeine free. This means your average cup of coffee will still contain a very small amount of caffeine, around 1-3 milligrams.

The coffee industry internationally refers to coffee countries as origins. Well known coffee origins are Brazil, Colombia and Ethiopia. A single origin beans is one that has only one origin in it and may be from a specific part of that origin.

Turkish Style (Ibrik, Briki and Jezve) – a thick, viscous and grainy coffee brew, it is often made with sugar in the process. A strong and intense coffee drink.
Stove Top (Cafetiere) – a low pressure espresso-style brewing method, steam is forced through the ground coffee producing a rich liquid with a thin layer of coffee oils (crema) which is a particularly Italian home brewing technique.
Drip Filter – hot water is dripped through ground coffee and gravity fed into a heated pot. A light brew is produced that accentuates the sweet and acidic elements of coffee. This is a very popular brewing technique and style in USA.

Grinders® Coffee Decafe Blend is Swiss Water Processed (SWP) which is a safe method using carbon filters to remove the caffeine. Unlike some processes it is not processed with any harmful petroleum or chemical substances.
Green coffee beans are placed into water and pass through a diffusion process where the caffeine is displaced from the green coffee bean. The green beans are soaked in a Green Coffee Extract (CGE) which is pure water saturated with soluble solids from green coffee. With time and temperature, coffee migrates out of the bean into the (CGE). This water is filtered, capturing and extracting the caffeine molecules making Grinders® Decafe Coffee 99.9% caffeine free.

Grinders® packaged coffee blends have a shelf life of 24 months from its date of roasting. The harmful elements that coffee is exposed to are heat, moisture, light and oxygen. Once exposed to these elements the quality of your coffee will deteriorate. Exposure from the bag after 5 days will result in stale, flat and bitter characteristics. For the best results and true flavours of Grinders® Coffee Blends c brew your coffee within the 5 day period. It is best to store coffee, beans or ground, in an air tight container away from strong smelling foods and in a cool dark place (e.g. pantry). The fridge or freezer is not the appropriate places as this will take the temperature of coffee to an extreme, drastically affecting the freshness.

Grinding your own coffee is one of the best steps you can take towards a superior brew. Coffee turns stales very quickly after it is ground; buying fresh coffee from a local roaster and having them grind it in the store largely negates the benefits of purchasing recently roasted coffee.

Coffee is enjoyed because of the flavour and characteristics it reveals when it is brewed. Ask yourself what you like in a coffee. It could be strong flavours or pleasant flavours, sweet fruity flavours or dark bitter flavours. Ask whether it is preferred as a milk coffee or black coffee.
Grinders® Coffee offers a range of blends to suit all palates and tastes. We have blend descriptions for each of our blends that indicate characteristics such as sweetness, bitterness, acidity and mouthfeel.. Explore our entire range of coffees and find one you love.

Coffee is enjoyed in many different cultures throughout the world by different brewing methods. The styles may be different and the expression true to its origin but one thing we all have in common is the search for the perfect cup. The coffee must be fresh and free from any odours, it should be ground appropriately for the brewing method of choice with a measured coffee dose to balance with the water levels and the serving quantity desired.

The Grinders® production plant, located in Fairfield VIC, has a state of the art roasting facility with two world-class Italian designed and built Brambati roasters; a 120kg and a 300kg.
